Use the Preferences API to save the current plot layout, with option
to revert to a sensible default.

Saving now done; not closing the bug yet because "revert to default"
isn't done yet.

"Revert to default" now added. Bloody hell that was a rabbit hole.
Ended up refactoring the whole preferences / plot sizes interface,
but it was long overdue.
